Tomorrow, as the Crow Flies is a book of ideas. Written in the style of a blog, it covers such philosophical topics as death in the absence of a soul, issues of personal identity and community, core values for modern life, and the nature and limits of truth. This is a strange book, and it's also not an easy one. It's more or less a book of free-wheeling philosophy, but certainly not of the academic sort. There's also a kind of story tagged on to the end of each chapter, little snippets of a narrative about a wandering mendicant and his band. I pictured that part taking place in northern California, which may give you a feel for the vibe of it. :)As other reviewers have pointed out, not everything in this book is new, but Oberg is ahead of his time on some social issues. For instance, he calls for free gender reassignment surgery for transgender individuals. When this book was written (in 2011) I don't think anyone would have suggested that but now it seems right around the corner (in countries with national health, at least). His politics are also either way ahead of the times or way behind them, I can't decide which. Like other parts of the book his three political chapters will make you curious and maybe a bit disturbed but certainly give you food for thought.
The chapters are not long but some of the paragraphs go on for pages. This got to be a strain at times, as did some of the formalistic devices for setting off the "lecture" part from the "story" part. Still, for readers who have the stamina to get through this I'd say it'll prove to be worth the time you put in. 4/5.

It's a shame the Occupiers probably didn't have this because they would have loved it. Well, maybe half of them would have loved it and the other half would have hated it. There's a statement on the modern left for you. What I liked in this book were all the little comments by the readers of the 'blog' at the end of each chapter. It's nice to see an author who can poke fun at himself.
The crow is one of the most intelligent of birds and is extremely social, just as we are. Tomorrow, As the Crow Flies, starts every chapter with "The following is the true story of Ogden Prounrow, the Great Teacher, the man who left us nothing but his philosophy" and then tells us that one of his followers, John the Baptised, has recorded all of his talks with a portable mp3 player. Each 'recording' is followed by commentary from readers both supporting and rejecting the words of this modern day Diogenes, and the book stresses the ever present need to question and seek a deeper understanding of basic issues which affect us all - well being, community, identity, education, global consciousness, sex, consumerism, ownership, the workings of government, morality... The digressions of this wandering philosopher address questions of why today's world is the way it is, with a sharp critique of modern society and its crass consumerism by the trickster philosopher and an emphasis on the need to live in the present, find our own values and chart the course of our own lives, while stressing the importance of values such as compassion, patience, and tolerance. Ultimately, the author's essays stress the need for us to think more deeply about the world we inhabit, question what in our society passes for wisdom, and act to change our lives and our world for the better. Well worth reading.
"Tomorrow, as the Crow Flies" is a book that gets directly to the heart of good ideas. Some of the ideas are radical, others familiar and gentle; but all said, the book is a signpost on the path to reason that bypasses sentimentality and dogma, but with humour and compassion for the reader and world. It is a bounty of ideas to inspire discussion, or ideas to embrace, perhaps some to reject, but not without consideration. In some cases I found myself nodding with the familiar only to have the discourse surprise me with new insight, like in the reading about Consumerism or the nature of Truth and Empircism.
The book, serious in intent, has a sense of humour and a jaunty, enthusiastic rhythm to the prose that is helped by "the great teacher" often providing lists in his critiques. It's an enjoyable read that provokes new perspectives that aren't lofty or supernatural, but human and compassionate.
